Slavonia

The eastern province of Slavonia, virtually untouched by tourism, is a region of vineyards, wheat fields and villages, where people sell sacks of red peppers from outside their houses, which end up in the famously spicy salami, goulash and fish stew.

In this area you will find the City of Dakovo, notable for its imposing, red brick cathedral, built between 1866 and 1882. With twin spires rising 84 metres, the cathedral dominates the city completely. The interior is equally impressive, with frescoes, painted ceilings and a central cupola.

A short walk from the cathedral is the Ulica Hrvatskih Velikana, a pleasant cafe-lined promenade.

Another attraction in Dakovo is the Lipizzaner stud farm, where the famous pure-white horses are bred.

Also in this region is the Kopacki Rit, a vast and beautiful wetland reserve at the confluence of the Danube and Drava rivers. It’s an important refuge for large numbers of nesting and migrant birds.

Much of the park is made up of willow, poplar and oak forests, home to large populations of deer, pine marten and wild boar. The rivers teem with carp, pike and catfish, and the ponds of reed, sedge and water-lilies become great marshy swamps when the Danube floods in summer.

The best introduction to the park is to take a boat trip - there are several trips a day in the summer season.
