Dubrovnik Region

Dalmatia’s far south is a special region in terms of its natural, cultural and historical virtues. Although better known for its history and culture - for it is here that Dubrovnik, unarguably the most beautiful of Croatian cities, is situated - its natural beauty is paralleled by the results of the toil of human hands. Quite conversely, here, like nowhere else in Croatia, Mother Nature was in her most bountiful mood when distributing the natural gems that are arranged like a garland of emeralds, one after another.

It is difficult to decide which of the islands is the more beautiful: Mljet, Sipan, Lokrum, or Lopud, speckled with truly enchanting old summer villas.

Then, there is the delightful, fertile valley of Konavle, a mountainous promontory of Peljesac, with its famous vineyards and many other attractions that serve to make this region one of the most breathtaking in the Mediterranean.

The Bay of Mali Ston is a kind of gateway to Croatia’s far south, cutting into the land at the point where the Peljesac peninsula is adjacent to the mainland. This picturesque bay is characterised by its clear sea, which is the reason why the best known of the Adriatic’s oyster beds are situated right here.

Sitting at the crossing to Peljesac are two charming little villages - Ston and Mali Ston - both connected by ancient ramparts and ornamented with numerous towers. Not far from Mali Ston Bay is another quite special area, the Neretva Delta, the only larger inundated area on the Croatian coast and therefore completely disparate from the country’s other regions. The abundance of water in the Neretva is also reflected in its traditional form of cultivation, where canals are dug and the spoil is used as the basis for arable land. Many of the land lots can therefore be accessed only by boat, usually the unique Neretvan ”trupica”.

However, Dalmatia’s far south begins with the Dubrovnik Littoral, which may be described as the ante-room of the ancient City of Dubrovnik, that rare jewel of world cultural heritage.

Off the shores of Dubrovnik and facing the city is a group of exquisite islands - the Elafites - famous for their luxurious old villas which are set harmoniously in lush subtropical greenery. The largest of these is Sipan, although the island rightly considered to be the most beautiful is Lokrum, situated just opposite the City of Dubrovnik.

The greater part of the island is covered with high macchia like that found elsewhere in primeval forests. In the area around the former Benedictine monastery dating from the 11th century are gardens containing many subtropical plants.
